Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, located on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, was built in 1929 and is the home of the University of Florida Gators football team. The stadium can hold 83,000 people and has a grass playing surface. The Gator fans of the team have nicknamed Griffin Stadium “The Swamp” over the years and have turned the “Tomahawk Chop” into the “Gator Chomp”. The Swamp has finished in the top 15 in yearly college football attendance almost 20 consecutive years even though the original capacity of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was a mere 21,769 when the stadium opened in 1929. The stadium was built below ground and was in the shape of a horseshoe until the stadium expanded into a bowl shape to fit more people into the stadium.
