Memorial Stadium, located on the Clemson University Campus, was built in 1942 and is the home of the Clemson University Tigers football team. Memorial Stadium also hosted the Carolina Panthers of the NFL in the 1995 season while their stadium was being completed. The stadium can hold 86,400 people and the playing surface is natural grass. Memorial Stadium cost $125,000 at the time of its construction. The stadium has been called “death valley” and has hosted “Bowden Bowls” over the years when Florida State, coached by Bobby Bowden, came to town to play Clemson who is coached by Tommy Bowden. The upper deck sections of the stadium were added in 1978 and 1983 and cost $13.5 million to build. The Tigers players have continued the long-standing tradition of “running down the hill”, not coming in through a tunnel but through the side of the stadium, down a hill, and directly onto the playing surface. This experience allows the players to get closer to their fans and has been described as “the most exciting 25 seconds in football”.
