Neyland Stadium, located at 1600 Stadium Drive, Suite 202, Knoxville, TN 37996, was built in 1921 and has been the home of the Tennessee Volunteers since its opening. Neyland Stadium uses a natural grass playing surface and can hold 102,854 people making it the largest stadium in the nation, just ahead of Michigan Stadium at the University of Michigan. The stadium actually held an NCAA-record 107,608 people for the 1996 contest between Florida. The stadium was named for the man most responsible for the growth and development of Tennessee football, General Robert R. Neyland, who served as head coach of the team from 1926 to 1952, with two interruptions for military service. After retiring from the coaching ranks, Neyland was also the athletic director until the time of his death in 1962. Neyland Stadium has undergone 13 renovations since it was built. Press boxes and executive suites were added in 1987 and more than 10,000 seats were added to the north section of the upper deck in 1996 bringing the capacity to what it is present-day.
