Rice-Eccles Stadium, located at JHC 102 A, Salt Lake City, UT 84112, was built in 1927 and is the home of the University of Utah Utes football team. The stadium can hold 46,500 people and the playing surface is natural grass. The name on the stadium recognizes benefactors Robert L. Rice and George S. Eccles. Rice in 1972 gave $1 million to the University to renovate the stadium, and Eccles, through the George S. and Dore Eccles Foundation, contributed $10 million toward a $52 million stadium expansion and renovation. The Eccles family has donated more than $50 million to the University over the year. Rice-Eccles Stadium also played host to the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games in 2002. For 70 years, the stadium was known as Ute Stadium before it was renamed Rice Stadium in 1972. In recent years, Rice-Eccles Stadium has gone through minor renovation projects to bring in a new scoreboard, new press boxes, and better seating facilities for the fans.
