Sanford Stadium is located on the campus of Georgia University in Athens and was finished in 1929. The Bulldogs’ home stadium uses a natural grass playing surface and at one point had a capacity of 86,520 but after renovations to the west end zone and an addition of 30 luxury sky suites on the upper deck of the south section of the stands, the new capacity is now 86,117. Sanford Stadium installed lights for night games in 1940 and added the second deck of seats in 1967. Recent renovations have seen the stadium turned into a bowl by enclosing the west and east ends of the stadium to increase the capacity crowd. Sanford Stadium also hosted the medal rounds of the men’s and women’s soccer competition during the 1996 Olympic Games.
